Introducing Augmented Artificial Intelligence in Health

  • In the last few years, artificial intelligence has been likened to the fourth Industrial Revolution. During the Covid19 pandemic, digital transformation occurred at an accelerated pace.
  • Augmented intelligence (AuI):
    • It can be defined as artificial intelligence (AI) that assists and enhances the human ability.
    • The objectives of AI interventions are to :
      • partner with humans and machines to amplify workforce capacity
      • reinforce the patient and provider relationship.
  • This term is relevant as shown in the recent survey to dermatologists of the American Academy of Dermatology.
    • The results showed that there is indeed a lot of concern regarding this human interface and this concern about trust:
      • dermatologists in America really value control and autonomy in practice. AI generated fear about physicians being replaced and de-skilling or an automation bias.
      • concerns were also about loss of patient and provider rapport.
      • concerns about accuracy, liability.
  • Thus it is ever more important to demonstrate how this technology can augment humanity in medicine by asking the right questions so that this intervention is valuable this is what actually will convince people to use this in the clinical setting.
