Introducing Dermatology in Europe

  • There are now 27 countries of the EU, following Brexit, but there are 44 countries in total (2020). And if you include smaller states and transcontinental countries, then we can count 51. So it’s not surprising that there’s going to be quite a lot of differences.
  • Sharing interest in teledermatology in Europe probably was kick-started by the 1st World Congress held in Graz. Austria in 2006. This was officiated by Peter Soyer when he was there, before moving to Australia.
  • We can see that there’ve been many parallel developments across many countries. However, the evolution of the systems have been shaped by individual healthcare systems, their differences, mostly driven by local enthusiasts who are wanting to share similar goals to improve dermatology provision for patients and, if possible, at a better cost.
