Teledermatology and monitoring Medication to treat Inflammatory Dermatoses

  • Inflammatory skin conditions are well-suited for Telemedicine in Dermatology: monitoring of medication to treat them is useful.
  • Medication monitoring for established patients has been shown to be effective. This could be done via video visits or by asynchronous visits and this suits both providers and patients.
  • Medication which can be monitored are:
    • isotretinoin for acne
    • methotrexate and biologics for psoriasis
    • hydroxychloroquine for lupus.
  • Online visit interventions could consist for example of dosage adaptation of the medication based on:
    • flaring
    • side effects
    • lab work
    • Discussion with the patient.
  • Indeed this is a great way of taking care of patients who are in remission and who don’t have active lesions requiring an in-person physical examination.
